Gu Qin, also called Yao Qin or Yu Qin, is one of the most ancient music instruments in China, together with Gu Zheng? and Se?. The name of Gu Qin means ancient music instrument. It was not called this name until early 20th century to differentiate it from the western instruments like violin. Due to its history of more than 3000 years, Gu Qin is often called the father of Chinese music instruments. In traditional Chinese culture, a gentleman need to be trained for four basic skills: Gu Qin, Wei Qi? (or Go), Calligraphy, and Chinese Painting?, or so called Qin Qi Shu Hua. Playing Gu Qin is considered the most important one.

Many famous figures in Chinese history are associated with Gu Qin. For example, Confucius is considered a master of Gu Qin. He always brought one with him when he was traveling around to the different countries in China at his time. He even composed several Gu Qin music himself.

In general, Gu Qin is about 3 feet six inches and half long (120~125cm), to represent the 365 days in a year. The width is about 6 feet (20cm), and the thickness is about 2 inches (6cm).
