Jia You

"Jia You! Jia You!" is almost ubiquitous in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Game. It is the world of choice among Chinese to encourage a team or a person in a competition. It literally means add (Jia) oil or gasoline (You), or refuel. Its equivalent in English can be Come on or Go! No one knows where this word really came from. Some theories floating around Internet are trying to trace its origin but none of them is convincing. Well, what is more important is that if you want to give someone a verbal push at any competition, no matter it is in an Olympic game, before a SAT test, or even the presidential election, you can always shout "Jia You!". BTW, it is a nice fit for today's oil dependent world.
